Information Redesign of Website

Hollerbachs Website

The purpose was to research Hollerbach’s website and find ways to help condense and streamline the three businesses together on one new website. The website has too much information for three businesses all combined together. It's hard to follow and understand where to find certain items on the site.

Overview
This was our first team project of the UX Bootcamp and consisted of three people. While working together remotely I took the lead on the content inventory, open and closed card sorting, and the tree testing done in UXtweak.

Timeline and Tools: Seven days to complete. Figma, Canva, Zoom for meetings, UXtweak for studies, Miro

Users and Audience
We targeted the people living in Sanford, FL where the restaurant is located. Then we looked at how to make this presentable to all folks that visit the area. The company has a restaurant with a fun dining experience, live music, and an outfitter. We also wanted people to be able to have a great experience with the takeout menu.

Current Site Map
This site map showed how deep and unorganized the website is. This helped give us some ideas on how to better organize the future site map.

We knew this task was going to be a tedious one. We needed to show everything here and catalog it correctly to help with the revised site map. This also needed to show the hidden pages found by SERP. By doing the SERP we were able to show the many pages that needed to be unpublished.

Content Inventory
Here I had to list out every single page that is connected to the site. Each page was cataloged for the organization. This also helped uncover information that would help in the future with card sorting.

Research

Open Card Sorting
For the open card sort, I was able to have six individuals sort. I asked them to sort the thirty cards and give each group a category name. I collected all this information in google sheets.

Closed Card Sorting
Here I took information from the open card sort topics and created a closed card sort. I used a website called Proven By Users to collect the information. Below are two different views of the information collected. This helped finalize the categories to use on the revised site map.

The final topics used for the site are as follows: Order Catering, Order Restaurant To Go, Events, Hollerbach's Outfitters, Hollerbach's Willow Tree Cafe Restaurant, Magnolia Square Market Deli, and About Us.

Revised Site Map

Below is the revised site map. Here you can see that the organization has changed and it's definitely more simple and organized from the testing that has taken place.

Tree Testing
For the testing, I asked three questions to see what path individual testers would take. The three questions I asked are as follows:
Question 1:
You want to order thirty sandwiches online for a work lunch and up the order in one hour. Where would you look for online ordering?
Question 2:
How would you go about making a reservation for dinner on Thursday night?
Question 3:
Before you head to the restaurant where would you find the kid's menu?

Below are the tree results from each question working from left to right. Overall there was an 83.3 % path success rate with 50% direct and 33.3% indirect. There was a 16.7% fail rate.

Mockup

Here I've decided to show the current website homepage. There is a lot happening on this page from the social media, the logo, the hero image, dates, and more.

picture of the current website and how cluttered it is

Through testing, we have found that a simple and organized homepage will benefit the Hollerbach's. Please scroll down to see the mockup that was created to simplify the company's three businesses into one clean homepage.

the homepage prototype we created

Here you can see we have cleaned up the homepage a bit. We have kept the main Hollerbach logo and have added three more images for the individual companies within. This will help the users when they want to go to a specific area within the site itself. We have also cleaned up the navigation for the users. There are now very specific titles here to help the user click less. We have also added clean images to view and kept the community involved. Lastly, we added a clear map to show how close the three businesses are to one another. This was an issue with customers once there in person.

Outcomes + Lessons Learned

User Research being done early helps to define the rest of the project. We presented the findings and recommendations of Hollerbach's website in seven days. We did reach the goal.

We learned that any website can be changed/updated to help a company's customer base for all types of users. In hindsight, we could have made the user research more of an earlier priority which would have helped the process move quicker. This was also the first project done in my UX Design Bootcamp.
